There’s a huge AFC South showdown this Sunday, December 20 as the Indianapolis Colts host the Houston Texans at Lucas Oil Stadium. The two teams are tied at the top of the division with identical 6-7 records on the year. The winner will take over the top spot by themselves and with the season winding down that’s where they both hope to be after Sunday’s big clash. The Texans are coming off of a 27-6 beat down at the hands of the New England Patriots last Sunday while the Colts didn’t fare any better as they were drilled 51-16 by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Texans lack of an elite offense hurt them once again against the Patriots in week 14. Quarterback Brian Hoyer tried his best, but the squad could manage just one visit to the red zone and a total of 189 yards during the game. Hoyer threw for just 102 yards and the backfield chipped in with only 87 yards on the ground. The Colts’ defense was burned the first time these two teams met this season though as Houston posted a pair of touchdowns and 312 yards in the air in a 27-20 defeat to Indianapolis in week five action. Houston wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins had a fine performance back then as he had 11 receptions for 169 yards.

The Colts’ defense hasn’t been very good this year as the team allows an average of 121.4 yards against on the ground each week as well as 276.2 in the air. The passing defense ranks 29th in the league and the rush defense is just slightly better at 25th. Houston may have to face Colts’ quarterback Andrew Luck on Sunday as he could be healthy enough to play. Last year’s first-overall draft pick Jadeveon Clowney had a pair of sacks against New England and could be a key for Houston this weekend. The Texans have recorded 30 sacks so far this campaign to rank 17th in the league with three of them coming last weekend. The Texans have gone 2-2 both against the spread and straight up on their past four road trips.

Colts’ quarterback Matt Hasselbeck looked his age on Sunday in their big loss to the Jaguars and he was also injured in the game. Therefore, it’s too early to tell what the Colts’ plans are for Sunday. But no matter who’s the starting quarterback, the team’s defense will need to play a lot better than it did last week. Jacksonville quarterback Blake Bortles ran rampant with three touchdown passes and 250 yards while the Jaguars gained a total of 444 yards. The Colts need to be wary of DeAndre Hopkins on Sunday as he could be a key factor. Indianapolis has given up 31 sacks so far this season so they’ll need to protect whoever starts. Houston has never won in Indianapolis since joining the NFL back in 2002. Houston is 0-13 in their visits and is 4-8-1 against the spread.
